The cornerstone of good health is eating right.

In a significant move towards what it calls a “healthier America,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), alongside the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), has announced plans to phase out several petroleum-based synthetic food dyes from the nation’s food supply. This initiative aims to eliminate six commonly used artificial colorings by the end of 2026, alongside actions against other specific dyes.

These six dyes are common in some processed foods, beverages, and sweets, often used just to enhance visual appeal.

This action comes amid growing attention over the potential health impacts of synthetic food dyes. FD&C Red dye No. 3 was officially banned by the FDA earlier this year. The agency is now urging food companies to accelerate the removal of Red No. 3 from their products ahead of the previously established 2028 deadlines.

The FDA stresses the shift towards safer alternatives, saying, “Today, the FDA is asking food companies to substitute petrochemical dyes with natural ingredients for American children as they already do in Europe and Canada.”

This is a broader trend of increasing consumer demand for more natural ingredients. Years before this initiative, several major brands had already begun to respond to consumer preferences.

For example, Kraft Heinz announced in April 2015 that it would remove artificial preservatives, flavors, and synthetic dyes from its iconic Macaroni & Cheese. By December 2015, the reformulated product, using natural colorants like paprika, annatto, and turmeric, began quietly appearing on shelves, a change many consumers didn’t even notice in terms of taste. Kraft cited a desire to meet evolving family needs and provide simpler ingredients as the motivation.

To support the current nationwide transition, the FDA announced several measures:

While the phase-out of the six prominent dyes relies on an “understanding” with the industry rather than an immediate formal ban, officials express confidence in industry cooperation, spurred partly by increasing state-level regulations and demonstrated consumer demand for cleaner labels.
